TED is owned by a nonprofit, nonpartisan foundation devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks. TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages.

The main TED conference is held annually in Canada at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The speakers are given a maximum of 18 minutes to present their ideas in the most innovative and engaging ways they can. Past speakers include Bill Clinton, Stephen Hawking, Jane Goodall, Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Bill Gates and many others.

TED is a global community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world. As there is a strong belief in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world, TED’s agenda is to make great ideas accessible and spark conversation.

In fact, TED’s mission is driven by this goal: How to promote ideas worth spreading?

You can find more information in TED’s official website.

TEDx is an initiative created in the spirit of TED’s overall mission to research and discover “ideas worth spreading.” TEDx events are organized by passionate individuals who seek to uncover new ideas and the latest research in their local areas and spark conversations in their communities. TEDx events include live speakers and recorded TED Talks and are organized independently under a free license granted by TED. These events are not controlled by TED, but event organizers agree to abide by TED’s format, and are offered guidelines for curation, speaker coaching, event organizing and more. They learn from TED and from each other. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. More than 3000 TEDx events are now held annually.

TEDxUniWA is a TEDx event organized mainly by the students and staff of the University of West Attica. The University of West Attica (UniWA) was established in 2018 as a result of the merger of the Technological Educational Institute of Athens and the Technological Educational Institute of Piraeus. It has two campuses in the area of Egaleo (Greece) and consists of five Schools and twenty-six Departments. You can find more info in the official website and the Wikipedia page of the University.

TEDxUniWA constitutes a non-profit project funded exclusively by sponsors, such as companies, organizations or beneficiaries. It is the first time such an event is held at UniWA. The aim is to inspire and spread innovative and creative ideas through powerful talks, workshops and performances. It is addressed primarily to the university community but also to the wider student and local communities of Athens.

Our organizing committee consists of about 40 volunteer members working in the following teams:

EXPERIENCEIT & GRAPHICS, MEDIA & COMMUNICATION,  PARTNERShips, Speakers & Hospitality, VENUE & PRODUCTION, Video & Photography
